MMEA To Station Three AW319 Helicpoters In Sabah Next Year

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) plans to station three AW319 helicopters here next year to strengthen its enforcement capability, Sabah and Labuan maritime enforcement chief First Admiral Mohd Taha Ibrahim said.

He said the Italian-made helicopters were expected to arrived in October and would undergo tests before being flown to Sabah.

Apart from enforcement, the helicopters would also be used in search and rescue operations, he added.

"Sabah has a vast maritime area and we hope that with the helicopters, we can further enhance our capability in helping the government to deal with the entry of illegal immigrants into Sabah.

"According to plan, the three helicopter will be stationed in Kota Kinabalu. The air surveillance will also cover Sarawak until such time that the Sarawak MMEA has its own air squadron," he told reporters after attending the agency's Chinese New Year celebration here.

He said the MMEA how has its own squadron with three helicopters in Subang.

Meanwhile, he said, the Sabah MMEA carried out 502 checks from January this year to yesterday, which saw the arrest of 62 people
